I have not found the perfect workflow for my G2 AVCHD-life file and iMovie. So, it's a trade-off between size and processing ease. for example, when skimming on the transcoded clips (the mov files) using the mouse, it's very smooth frame by frame when skimming the mp4 files, there are frame jumping. However, editing such mp4 file can be more challenging on your Mac. But it just take about the same (or longer) for iMedia Converter to convert the MTS into iMOvie friendly mp4. I don't really know how much quality is lost during such process. I used iMedia Converter, which take MTS file and transcode according to your codec of choice. Many video transcoding app can transcode the MTS into such MP4 files. Once in iMovie, you can file the copied file under iMovie's project folder as the original mp4 format, and it's the same size file (or same file). For such files, during import process iMovie ask you very you want to copy or move, and it would copy or move the original file. For example, the mp4 file generated by some samsung digital camera, mp4 file by Sanyo camcorder, both of which I own (or owned). Real H264 compatible video file needs much less time to be imported by iMovie. They are in mov format and they are much larger than the originals. Once iMovie imported clips generated by remux or ClipWrap (be it m4v or mov), you can go into the iMovie project folder and find the corresponding transcoded files. So it can not be directly imported and edited by iMovie, always need transcode into Mov. The MTS files generated by G2 is NOT just a wrap around Mac friendly. Remux re-wrap into m4v file, then import as file into iMovie need 1m 30 sec.ĬlipWrap re-wrap into mov file, then import as file into iMovie, still need similarly long time as remux. MTS clip of 1m 39sec, iMovie import from AVCHD archive need 1m 10 sec. People say that it's good in that it just re-wrap the video files of the MTS into the H264 format so that iMovie will import it natively. Just to be clear I use Pana G2 so I own deal with AVCHD-lite format, and I only deal with iMovie importing and editing.Ībout Remux. Here is a good link and summary of what's out there, however by my own test there are still mis-leading information.
